The Great Kate Moss

Happy Birthday to the Great Kate Moss!  I have loved Kate Moss for a very long time.  Her style is all her own and half of my ABW outfits are inspired by hers.  I also love her line Topshop - I think they have some great clothes.

My Summer Wishlist

Every year I look forward to Summer because I feel that I do the most 'changing' during that season. I've noticed that in the last 5 years  each year has been a significant Summer, each with its own soundtrack, scent and of course a completely different look.

I was introduced to my first love in the Summer of 2005.  I would listen to him play guitar for hours; he would get me from work and take me to hipster coffee houses in the city while my parents thought I was with my friends from work.

My first Summer away from home, I stayed in the collegiate part of the city in a sweaty apartment, dyed my hair black and bought my first pair of skinny jeans.  I worked at Forever 21 and learned how to make a whole wardrobe off of basics - basics we would get 50% off of clearance price for...YAY,

One Summer I listened to Tommy Gurerro's Return of the Bastard everyday and worked as a cocktail waitress at a ceviche and tapas lounge - they actually had an all black dress code too! We had to wear our hair up so this was the only time I ever experimented with earrings. This was a crazy Summer!!

Last Summer, I was getting over a really dramatic breakup and moved to a quieter but more classy part of town, I began working at the museum and thus began my ABW craze. During this time my friend Justin gave me a vintage copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde; I became obsessed with it! I loved the humor, the lavish settings of velvety lounges and heavy silk tapestries, how graceful and intelligent the speech was, the mere truth of it all...it's a beautiful story and I highly recommend it.

This Summer has just begun and its probably my busiest Summer so far, which hopefully will lead to a fruitful and productive Fall.  I have applied for a promotion at the museum and am anticipating an interview in the near future!  I feel a coming of age arriving in my sense of style, I feel more knowledgeable of my environment and a need to be more professional, classic and above all, individual.

Here is my Summer Wishlist:
1 - A Hair Change:  As stated in the previous blog, I have been toiling with the idea of either chopping my past-shoulders hair to a sassy long bob or happy-go-lucky highlights to celebrate the summer

2 - A romantic Summer dress:  Like the one Carrie Bradshaw wore when she fell in the lake with big.  It's so romantic, so simple, and so French!

3 - Neutrals: Though black is the color that I will forever be loyal too, I do like the look of a neutral palate.  There's sophistication, a kind of crisp minimalism that goes along with neutral wear.

4 - Gorgeous Sandals: The strappier the better for me!  I'm open for anything when it comes to sandals -they're a great way to pull together, a pale Summer wardrobe.
Yves Saint Laurent metallic sandals.  They are featured as the Last Look in the June 2011 Vogue.   Stunning!

5 - A Summer Hat: As a big believer in practicing safe sun, I believe hats are a chic and edgy way to protect yourself- add big sunglasses and it's movie star glam!!

I love this boho look!
A Big Floppy Sun Hat paired with a baggy silhouette and cool accessories.
6 - The Perfect Shade of Lipstick : I love how classic lipstick is.  Putting it on makes you feel like an instant diva.  I have full lips and often I end up buying shades that make my mouth look muddy.  I am on the hunt for the perfect lip shade..
Red Lips at Dolce & Gabanna: I love how classic and sexy red lips are - they are the LBD of make up.  Especially in the summer, I think it would be really hot to wear jeans and a white tee allowing the focus to be perfectly pouted red lips.
I love Berry Stained Lips; they make a statement but yet its a casual way to wear red.  It's so modern and very chic when paired with clean skin and minimal eye makeup.

Coral Lips are so cool and I think brunettes wear them well.  It adds a youthful glow by adding a pop of color to your face.

 7. Something for Mingling and Cocktails - As this is foreseen to be a year of sophistication so comes a schedule hopefully filled with cocktail socials, galas, and outings.  These should be pieces that can easily be converted to Fall/Winter with a simple blazer or faux fur coat.
The palate on this Gucci look is eclectic and very sophisticated.

8. Skinny Cargos - These can easily become a part of my wardrobe for rainy days paired with flats or sky high heels for an urban safari look!
Leighton Meester looks cool and very comfortable in her skinny cargos!

Jessica Alba rocks Houlihan by J Brand skinny cargos
9. Crocheted Pieces - Mainly inspired by Emilio Pucci's crocheted pieces in his recent Spring collection, crocheted pieces add a bit of a homemade bohemian twist.  My granny is an excellent crocheter; Each Winter I look forward to her crocheted pieces tightly knitted with perfection and love (last year I asked for a solid black scarf - go figure  -it kept me warm and chic all winter and is now my favorite scarf).  It's nice to see crochet crossing over into Summer wardrobes...

 10. A Great Bathing Suit - This Summer, my roommate's Dad has offered his cabin by the lake to us for a weekend, as well as my boyfriend's Dad has offered his pontoon for a night!  There is a lot of swimming, sun bathing, out door water fun in my future.  I want something durable enough to play in  yet chic, and won't give me weird tan lines...

Maggie Gyllenhal and the Great Haircut Debate

Wearing a floral printed jumpsuit with a long sheer grey cardigan and Dr.Scholls red exercise sandals and smelling pleasantly of roses, Maggie Gyllenhal came into the museum yesterday with her mom and daughter.   It just so happened that I had a book and a pen on me so as she exited the gallery I asked if she could sign it and she did!! As she autographed my book, I recommended an exhibit downstairs to her daughter who has inherited the sparkling blue Gyllenhal eyes. .

What Maggie Wore From My Shopstyle:

Though I've always loved Maggie's retro hipster look, it was her haircut that struck a chord in me.  Her breezy finger-waved tendrils grazed her collarbone a la Hollywood flapper movie star.  It was so simple and chic, yet different and very edgy.  I've been debating doing something with my hair I just can't figure out if I want a sophisticated 'lob' aka long-bob; it would be very grown up and lady-like, sexy yet sophisticated.  Or beachy highlights to my already long hair (clue: my hair is SUPER dark right now so it would be a change); I would want them to be all over and thin like how Audrey had them as Holly in Breakfast at Tiffany's or like  the Victoria's Secret models wear with glowing skin. What to do ??
Here are some ideas and inspirations, let me know what you think...

If I go with the Alessandra look I will definitely need to tan more!

I've always loved Holly's chic updo with the happy highlights.  She has very fair skin like me so I would go for that tone as well. (Thank you FabAudrey)

The Gwyneth: Sexy, fresh, edgy and polished  - it would be very becoming...   (Thank you Hairfits)
I think Anne Hathaway's hair looks very classic and sophisticated here.  I would wear shift dresses and big shades all the time!
Heidi's Hair is a bit shorter than I wanted to go but I am half tempted to go that short...eek!
Love Minka's color!  She's my fav brunette because she has brown hair and brown eyes like me and she proves that that isn't boring at all!!
Camilla Bell rocks waves and shorter length!
I REALLY like Cameron Diaz's hair in this pic.  It is the exact length - I wasn't planning on bangs but if I decided to get them I would get the soft sideswept ones like she has.
OR.....Sultry Bombshell hair like my girls Adriana Lima and Lily Aldridge.
I can't decide.  I feel like it would be logical to cut it for the Summer and then don't touch it, that way come fall, I will have a healthy head of hair ready to change color just as the leaves do...

Happy Birthday to My Mama!!!

I love love LOVE this time of year.  It's officially Summer everything is green and in bloom, and I begin my Summer every year by celebrating my favorite person in the world...my mama.   Born and raised a California girl, my mom always has an insightful and balanced way of thinking.

She is the first person who introduced fashion to me.  I remember being very young and loving to hear her stories about when she was younger; her feathered-hair-surfer girl days on Daytona Beach, a "Chola" phase in her teen years during the 70's, her days of club hopping and being a  'band-aid' for punk rock bands that played with the likes of The Cramps, Red Hot Chili Peppers and X, and finally when I came around, she had just earned her hair license from Vidal Sassoon and worked in a very successful salon in LA proper-the smell of salons is still my favorite smell.  She is a true style chameleon.

She has such passion for everything in life!  She loves food, music, movies, fashion, everything - she has her own likes and dislikes which create such a signature style. She taught me how to be proud of who I am, who NOT to let men hurt me and to be aware of their ways, she taught me how to take care of myself, and most of all how to live.  My mom survived stage 3 breast cancer last year, she was so strong and still is!  Not too long ago, we sat down and small-talked, where she said that during the whole time she was sick she just kept thinking to herself "this isn't it."  Her positive outlook, her will to survive, are what I aspire to be - she is my icon...
Here are some things that have remind me of my mom and her style....

Madonna - Just Like a Prayer:  Madonna is the first music I can remember.  My mom had me hooked on "Holiday" and "Border line" at age 3!! There is also this story I remember about her winning some look-a-like contest because she looked like Madonna in 'Like a Prayer.'
My Mom loves fashion from the 1920's through the 40's - but cannot stand the 50's. I grew up watching and loving old movies with her like Mildred Pierce starring Joan Crawford.

Coffee is a part of my mom's everyday life - at one point she even made a career out of it! Now I'm an addict!
We are Mexican and Proud of it!  My mom always find beauty in everything and she taught me how to love my culture; my mom would like this mural, it looks like something you would see on a random wall near Dodger Stadium.
Mobster movies are a favorite in the family.  My mom has a deep appreciation for Family style Italian food, Rat Pack-esque music, and Godfather-style attitudes. Goodfellas is an all time favorite.

What girl (in my age bracket) and her mom DIDN'T watch Sex & The City together....I know I did! Whenever my mom and I talk about my love life, somehow, some way, Sex & The City gets referenced!
My Mom read Where the Wild Things Are to me almost every night!  I think Max was possibly my first love interest.
Surfing or anything to do with California culture, will always remind me of my mama!
I could go on forever.  My mom has had a HUGE impact on my life and it's only suitable that her birthday is as soon as Summer starts, it's like Season of Mama.  I love you and Happy Birthday!!
